Accessibility
This guide is for every teacher, leader, student and parent. We want it to work well for you, however you read the web.
Our aim
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We build the site with plain HTML, very little JavaScript and self-hosted fonts, so it loads quickly and works with assistive technology.
What we do
- Main text is 18 pixels. Other text is at least 14 pixels, except the fine print on the Privacy Label. We use Atkinson Hyperlegible, a typeface made for clear reading.
- Text and background colours meet the WCAG contrast ratios, in light and dark mode.
- A result is never shown by colour alone. Each one also has a shape and words.
- You can use the site with a keyboard, and focus is visible as you move around.
- The home page title changes its last words once. You can pause it. If your device asks for less motion, it does not move at all, and screen readers hear one still sentence.
- Pages work at 320 pixels wide without sideways scrolling.
- The readiness check works without JavaScript. Pages are designed to print on A4 (see known issues).
How we test
On 25 September 2026 we ran an automated check (axe) on our main pages in light and dark mode, at 320 pixels and wider, and tested by hand with a keyboard and in print. Automated checks find only some problems, so we also want to hear from you.
Known issues
- With JavaScript turned off, some browsers leave closed sections (notes and sources) out of a printout.
- We have not yet tested the site with a screen reader from start to finish, or at 200% text size.
